Around five years ago, when Rocky was just six years old, he developed IVDD in Dachshunds, a common spinal condition that can significantly affect mobility and quality of life.
The little Dachshund, affectionately known as "the Rockstar," suddenly lost the use of his back legs after suffering from Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). Once full of energy and personality, Rocky was left completely paralysed from the waist down and unable to even go to the toilet on his own.
His owner, Dan, was devastated.
"We were told by the vets there was little hope and that we should consider putting him down. However, he's my best friend and I couldn't give up on him without a fight."
Instead of saying goodbye, Dan made a promise to do everything possible to help Rocky recover.
Understanding IVDD in Dachshunds
IVDD is a common spinal condition in Dachshunds and other long-backed breeds. It occurs when the discs between the vertebrae become damaged or rupture, putting pressure on the spinal cord.
Symptoms can range from mild pain and reduced mobility to complete paralysis.
Risk factors for IVDD can include genetics, age, activity level, and excess body weight.
For Rocky, weight management became a critical part of his recovery journey.
"Rocky's biggest problem was being over-fed. That's essentially how his back went on him. He pushed out to nearly 14kg, when a healthy weight for a Dachshund is around 6–8kg."
Building a Recovery Plan
Rocky's recovery wasn't built on one single solution. It was a combination of dedication, consistency, and the importance of combining veterinary care, rehabilitation, weight management, and natural support for dogs with IVDD.
His family committed to:
- Weekly chiropractic appointments
- Hydrotherapy sessions three times a week
- A healthier diet and weight management plan
- Daily support with FortunatePaws Hemp Seed Oil
Dan had already experienced the benefits of hemp products himself, so when a family friend recommended FortunatePaws Hemp Seed Oil for dogs, he decided to give it a try.
"I immediately jumped on your site and ordered the Rockstar some oil among other hemp products."
Fast Forward To Two Years Later: A Remarkable Recovery

Rocky's story is one of hope. Two years after being diagnosed with IVDD and facing the possibility of euthanasia, Rocky has made a full recovery. Back doing the things he loves most, running, chasing his favourite balls. Simply enjoying life again.
Most importantly, he's back to being himself.
"I am proud to say two years on from that devastating injury, Rocky has made a full recovery. We still go on runs, he chases his favourite balls around and is essentially his old self before he got IVDD."
Why a Holistic Approach Matters
Every dog's recovery journey is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution.
For Rocky, success came from combining professional veterinary care and rehabilitation with lifestyle changes, healthy weight management, and daily nutritional support for dogs with IVDD.
Many pet parents choose hemp oil for senior dogs as part of their daily wellness routine to help support joint health, mobility, and overall wellbeing.
Our Hemp Seed Oil is naturally rich in Omega-3, 6 and 9 fatty acids, which help support:
- Joint health and mobility
- Overall wellbeing
- Healthy skin and coat
- Daily wellness for active and senior pets
While Hemp Seed Oil is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease, many pet parents choose it as part of their dog's everyday wellness routine.
